The IUC was founded by Jamie Dennis, Dara Ashby and Blake Ashby.  Jamie, Dara and Blake first began working on the program in 2012, holding a class at the Matthews-Dickey Boys & Girls Club in St. Louis.

The current version was first piloted in the Ferguson-Florissant, Missouri school district during the 2017/2018 school year.  The program was very enthusiastically received by the students and the school administration, which requested the class continue and expand in the 2018/2019 school year.
